INTERACTIVE AREA MAP of NORTHEAST ARTHUR COUNTY RANCH

This nice ranch includes the right mix of wet hay meadows and summer rangeland to carry 260-280 cows and needed bulls annually. Access to the ranch is via the county maintained oil mat road. This road offers access from State Highway 92 from the south and State Highway 2 from the north.

At the headquarters unit of the ranch most of the summer range is located in the northern side of the ranch. The north pastures are crossed by a county maintained gravel road in the north valley. There are low lying areas in this valley that are covered by ponds and small lakes.

The building site is located on the eastern edge of the meadow and does include an older home, steel covered pole barn, steel shop building and steel machine storage building. A modest set of working pens is also located at the building site but most sorting is done at the shipping pen which is near the ranch access and is a set of steel shipping pens with scale. This set-up has historically been used and maintained by neighboring ranches. This is common to the ranch country.

Stock water on the ranch is provided by 18 windmills pumping from 20 to 60 feet. Perimeter fencing is mostly 4 wire barbed wire fences and interior fences are mostly 3 wire bared wire fences.

The are many strategically placed cedar tree shelter belts on the ranch. These shelter belts offer protection to young calves during snow storms. The owners were awarded a tree planting award by the Natural Resources District for their work in planting these trees.

The wet hay meadows on the ranch historically produce about 1.5 ton of hay per acre. The meadows are drained with strategically placed ditches to increase the yield of the hay production. The ground water flows in the ditches into Brown Lake which is in the southeastern corner of the main unit of the ranch. Brown Lake is know for its variety of fish. The wet hay meadows are cross fenced for management during winter season grazing.

Located about 60 miles from the North Platte River valley, the ranch is close to available sources of supplemental protein for the winter months. While this ranch is currently utilized as a cake and range operation some producers in the region haul their cows to corn stalk fields in the valley for grazing in the late fall and winter months prior to calving. Distiller by products are also available from ethanol plants in southwest Nebraska.

Auction markets in the region are Ogallala Livestock and North Platte Stockyards and additional marketing is available with local reps from Cattle Country Video, Western Video, Superior Video, Northern Livestock Video Auctions. For retained ownership of cattle many commercial feed yards are in west central Nebraska.

Arthur County School is a K-12 School and offers busing for their students.

The Ogallala Aquifer and The Sandhills of Nebraska - One of the most unique geographic features in North America, the Sandhills of Nebraska contain hundreds of feet of water saturated course sand and gravel. Below the surface is one of the largest water reserves in North America – The Ogallala Aquifer. This enormous sand formation is a huge sponge that absorbs rain and snowfall and as witnessed in 2020 once saturated water flows out of the hills feeding the hay meadows. Nearly half of the annual precipitation percolates downward into this remarkable underground pool.
